3.2" Cretaceous Fossil Oyster (Rastellum) in Rock - Texas
These are two (once complete, one partial) lower Cretaceous aged fossil oysters of the species Rastellum carinatum, collected from the Washita Group near Lake Texoma, Texas. It has wide, angled ribs that have led to it being called the 'denture clam'. The zig-zag joint between the two shell halves stopped coarse dirt and debris from entering the shell and damaging its soft body. Like modern oysters it lived in shallow coastal waters including the intertidal zone (the area between high and low tide) and fed on food particles that it filtered out of the sea water.
It comes with an acrylic display stand.
