Captorhinus Skull (Permian Reptile) With Pyrite - Oklahoma

This is a incredible offering, a very intact, 2.63" long skull of the Permian captorhinid reptile Captorhinus aguti. This skull was collected from the cave and fissure fill deposits at the now closed Richard's Spur Quarry in Comanche County, Oklahoma. The well preserved skull has many disarticulated bones from the skeleton attached to the surface and is naturally encrusted in glimmering pyrite and calcite. The upper portion of the skull is 99% complete, and the right lower portion is present and compete. Really a unique and very aesthetic specimen.

Captorhinus is an extinct genus of captorhinid reptiles that lived during the Permian period, and was one of the earliest and most primitive reptiles. Its remains are known from North America, Europe, India and Africa. It was fairly small--around 12 inches in length--and likely bore a resemblance to modern lizards.
