Big, Fat 6" Drotops Trilobite - Great Preparation
This is a very nice example of the giant phacopid trilobite Drotops megalomanicus. Both the preservation and the preparation on this specimen is exceptional. Just check out how nice the eye facets are in this example. The specimen is 6" long, laid out prone and is very wide. There is some missing shell on the left side of the tail but otherwise the shell preservation is really good on this specimen.
One of the most striking features of this trilobites is the large schizochroal (multi-faceted) eyes which would have given it a nearly 360 degree field of vision. It also has a very bumpy exoskeleton, in particularly on it's head.

How a Drotops might be found in the field, with part of the tail exposed in the broken rock. It would then be prepared using airscribes and air abrasives a process that would likely take 20+ hours for a good specimen..
