3.5" Pennsylvanian Plant (Lycopodites) Plate - Kentucky
This is a fossil plant plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. It contains Stalks, leaflets and unidentified plant material. There are several leaflets that are likely the seed fern Sphenopteris, and many stalks that could be fern or horsetail. A small stalk of Lycopodites is present and is the most defined form. These fossils are from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
Sphenopteris is a genus of seed ferns, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns. Lycopodites is a herbaceous plant, meaning it does not have a woody stem and its stalks are green and fairly soft.
It comes with an acrylic display stand.
