This is a .8" fossil horsetail (Sphenophyllum) whorl, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. Sphenophyllum is an extinct genus of vine like horsetails from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Eastern Kentucky and Ohio.
