8.2" 3D Fossil Crinoid (Encrinus) - Germany

This is an impressive, 8.2" long, fossil crinoid (Encrinus liliiformis) from the Muschelkalk Formation of Germany. These crinoids are Triassic in age, approximately 230 million years old. It's very inflated and nicely prepared.

As with most specimens available from this formation the surrounding rock has been heavily repaired and stabilized with epoxy. This is required as the shale they are found in is typically quite fractured.

Comes with a display stand.

Crinoids, sometimes commonly referred to as sea lilies, are animals, not plants. They are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Many crinoid traits are like other members of their phylum; such traits include tube feet, radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and appendages in multiples of five (pentameral). They first appeared in the Ordovician (488 million years ago) and some species are still alive today.
