.7" Cretaceous Gastropod (Anchura) Fossil - Texas

This is a .7" long example of Anchura sp., a genus of gastropod that lived through the Cretaceous period. It was collected from the Goodland Formation in Decatur, Texas. The process of exposing the gastropod resulted in a wide variety of partial marine fossils that were partially exposed as well.

Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
