Hadrosaur Metatarsal - Two Medicine Formation, Montana #71694

This is a Hadrosaur (Duck-Billed Dinosaur) metatarsal (Foot/Toe Bone) that was collected from the Two Medicine Formation in Montana. For the most part, the bone preserved well, though there are multiple gap fills and repaired cracks through the diaphysis, as well as along the points of articulation.

Due to the bone similarities of the Ornithopods that come out of the Two Medicine Formation, bones of the feet especially, as well as the unrecorded specifics from the original collector, I cannot provide an accurate genus/species identification. However, based on bony landmarks, it's very likely that this is the lateral metatarsal of the left foot.

Hadrosaurs

are frequently referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs and are members of the Ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. They were fairly common herbivores that roamed Asia, Europe, and North America during the Upper Cretaceous Period. Many species of Hadrosaurs had distinctive crests on their heads, some of which had air-filled chambers that may have produced a distinct sound. These crests may have been used for both audio and visual display purposes.
