6.5" Fossil Bony Fish (Palaeonotopterus) Skull w/ Mouth Plate -Morocco

This is a 6.5" long, partial skull from the Upper Cretaceous-aged bony fish, Palaeonotopterus greenwoodi, collected from the Kem Kem Beds of Taouz, Morocco. Typically only the mouth plate is found from this species, making this a truly unique and uncommon find. Even the articulation point of the anterior-most vertebra remained intact on this specimen!

Instead of cutting teeth, these fish had mouth plates for crushing, aiding in feeding on mollusks and crustaceans like crabs.

Comes with an acrylic stand.

There are a couple of repaired cracks through this specimen, however there is no significant gap fill restoration.
