5" Spiny Drotops Armatus Trilobite - Colorful Shell

This is a perfectly prone, 5" long, spiny Drotops armatus trilobite from the Bou Dib Formation of Morocco. Nearly 100 spines along its thorax would have made it unappetizing prey from the predators of the Devonian.

As with the majority of these you see on the market it appears that most of the spines on this specimen have been restored. The price has been reduced accordingly. Other than the spines there is about 3% shell restoration along a repaired crack running diagonally through the head and throax.

About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
