5.8" Black Ammonite Pair - Rare Coloration

While ammonite fossils of the genus Cleoniceras are common and widely available, these are some of first ones with a dark black coloration I've been able to acquire. They are collected from a different location and the difference in coloration would be due to changes to the rock within the earth after the ammonite was fossilized, probably due to the addition of Manganese. You'll notice some of the attached matrix on the back side is a deep orange color instead of the typical grey from the other locality further hinting at these changes.

This ammonite is 5.8 inches in diameter and has been sliced and half and polished to reveal the inner detail. Many of the chambers have been preserved as pockets of crystals.

Both halves are included and it comes with a pair of acrylic display stands.
