It is believed that cyanobacteria colonies are responsible for these deposits, which are roughly 2.1 billion years old (Precambrian). This material can be found in a wide variety of shades including brown, grey, black, orange, peach, pink, red, and yellow, and often in mottled, laced, and banded patterns.
