Large 5.4" Edmontosaurus Caudal Vertebrae - Montana

This is a 5.4" tall caudal (tail) vertebrae from Edmontosaurus annectens. It was found in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. Most of the processes are missing but it has much of the shiny outer bone surface remaining and is quite solid. There is one nicely preserved area where the lower tail bones (chevrons) articulated with the vertebrae. This would have been located just behind the hip bone of the animal. There are three crack repairs and the specimen had been stabilized to prevent breakage.

Hadrosaurs are frequently referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs and are members of the Ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. They were fairly common herbivores that roamed Asia, Europe, and North America during the Upper Cretaceous Period. Many species of Hadrosaurs had distinctive crests on their heads, some of which had air-filled chambers that may have produced a distinct sound. These crests may have been used for both audio and visual display purposes.
