5.3" Cut/Polished Fossil Ammonite (Calycoceras) - Texas
This is a Calycoceras tarrantense ammonite fossil from the Late Cretaceous Woodbine Formation of Texas. The fossil was sliced in half and polished to reveal the beautiful, inner chamber detail, which nicely features large calcite crystals. Both halves of the fossil are included along with a display stand for each side.
Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
