5.15" Polished Fossil Teredo (Shipworm Bored) Wood - England
This is a polished slab of fossil Teredo Wood from the Isle of Sheppey in England. Teredo petrified wood is unique because of the "worming" of the original wood by the prehistoric Teredo (Teredolites longissimus)--a worm-shaped marine mollusk related to modern clams, mussels, and oysters. This petrified wood comes out of the London Clay Formation and is Eocene in age. The teredo burrows have been lined with calcite, giving the petrified wood a very interesting look.
It comes with an acrylic display stand.
Under shortwave ultraviolet light, the calcite-lined burrows exhibit a vibrant fluorescence.
