4.3" Pyrite Replaced Crinoid (Dendocrinus) - Middleport, New York

This is a partially pyrite-replaced Dendocrinus crinoid from the Rochester Shale in New York. It is 4.3" long (including the stem) and nicely centered on a 7.7 x 6.3" slab of shale. Complete crinoids are one of the scarcer components of the fauna in the quarry.

There is one repaired crack running through the rock.

Crinoids, sometimes commonly referred to as sea lilies, are animals, not plants. They are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Many crinoid traits are like other members of their phylum; such traits include tube feet, radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and appendages in multiples of five (pentameral). They first appeared in the Ordovician (488 million years ago) and some species are still alive today.
