4.2" Long T-Rex or Nanotyrannus Toe Bone - Montana
This is a nicely preserved toe bone of either Nanotyrannus lancensis or a small T-Rex. It was collected from a private ranch in Garfield County, Montana. It's 4.2" long with almost no erosion to the surface of the bone. There is a repaired break in the center of the bone with some minor gap fill restoration work in the crack. T-Rex bones in this nice of condition are fairly rare find.
There is a hot debate among paleontologists about whether Nanotyrannus and Tyrannosaurus rex (T-Rex) are really the same species, with Nanotyrannus representing juveniles. No matter, which side of the debate you fall on it's likely that it would not be possible to definitively assign an smaller, isolated toe bone to one genus or the other.
