This is an absolutely massive, dorsal vertebra of a rare sauropod dinosaur (Barosaurus). It comes from the the famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It measures in at a whopping 39" tall as is, and stands just over 44" tall when mounted to the rotating, custom metal display stand. This enormous, museum-quality specimen is sure to inspire fascination and wonder!
Barosaurus was an enormous sauropod closely related to the much more common Diplodocus but had a longer neck and shorter tail. A dult Barosaurus grew up to lengths over 90 feet and weighed over 20 tons. Many of the bones are nearly indestinguishable between these two genus but the ID was made based on the presence of associated material in the quarry.
Over the years within the ground, this vertebra underwent some significant compression. The compression resulted in fracturing and fragmentation of the bone, which required gap fill restoration to piece bag together. The majority of the reconstruction restoration can be found through the most fragile portions of the vertebra which include the processes, pedicles, prezygapophyses, and postzygapophyses.
Measurements:
Vertebra - 39 x 23 x 10"
Height on stand - 44.3" tall
Anterior centrum face width - 12" wide
Posterior centrum face width - 14" wide
Thickness from prezygapophyses to postzygapophyses - 10" thick
The Bone Cabin Quarry has historical significance because it was discovered in 1897 and excavated by the American Museum of Natural History from 1898 through 1905. It lies near the famous Como Bluff and got its name from a nearby sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil dinosaur bones. This quarry now lies on private land, where it continues to be excavated.
