This is a female fossil fly (order Diptera) of the genus Plecia, collected from an Oligocene-aged (Stampien/Rupelian) shale deposit at Mine de Gaude in Southern France. The fly has been covered by a thin sealant to highlight its detail.

This is part of an old collection that we recently acquired. The collection includes a variety of insect fossils from around Southern France, collected over a span of 50 years by a woman with PhDs in paleontology and pharmacology.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.
