About Glossopteris
Glossopteris is an extinct genus of seed ferns that thrived during the Permian Period, roughly 300 to 250 million years ago. Its distinctive tongue-shaped leaves, marked by a central vein and fine reticulated venation, make it one of the most recognizable fossil plants of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. In Australia, Glossopteris fossils are commonly found in Permian-aged rock formations, particularly in coal-bearing strata, where their abundance provides key evidence of lush, swampy forests that once covered the region. The widespread distribution of Glossopteris across southern continents also played a crucial role in supporting the theory of continental drift. These fossils offer a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric ecosystems and the evolution of early seed plants.
