This is a 3.4" long, jaw section of Merycoidodon culbertsoni, an Oreodont,from the the Brule Formation, Niobrara County, Wyoming. It is both sides of the mandible and a section of the left maxilla (upper jaw). The bone is in very good condition and there are six teeth on each side of the mandible and five in the maxilla.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
