3.4" Ankylosaur (Denversaurus?) Scute - Montana
This is a nice, 3.4" wide fossil scute (armor plate) of an Ankylosaur, likely Denversaurus. It was collected this past summer from the Hell Creek Formation in Montana and is in wonderful condition.
Ankylosaurs were herbivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous and evolved complete body armor covered in plates, scutes and spikes. Some species wielded a massive tail club which could have been used to defensive purposes against predators such as Tyrannosaurs. Adult Ankylosaurs are believed to have reached up to 25 feet in length.
