This is a 3.1" fossil horsetail (Calamites) stalk section from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. Calamites is an extinct genus of tree-like horsetails from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
