This is an absolutely massive caudal vertebra of the enormous Jurassic sauropod, Barosaurus sp., collected from the famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. It measures in at a whopping 27" tall (not including chevron), and stands just under 41" tall when mounted to the spinning, custom metal display stand. This jaw-dropping vertebra is sure to turn heads!
Over the years within the ground, this vertebra underwent some significant compression. The compression resulted in fracturing and fragmentation of the bone, which required gap fill restoration to piece back together. The majority of the reconstruction restoration can be found through the most fragile portions of the vertebra which include the processes, prezygapophyses, and postzygapophyses.
Measurements:
Vertebra - 27 x 22.3 x 8"
Height on stand - 41" tall
Chevron - 11.3 x 5.4"
Centrum width - 12" wide
Thickness from prezygapophyses to postzygapophyses - 8" thick
The Bone Cabin Quarry has historical significance because it was discovered in 1897 and excavated by the American Museum of Natural History from 1898 through 1905. It lies near the famous Como Bluff and got its name from a nearby sheepherder's cabin built entirely out of fossil dinosaur bones. This quarry now lies on private land, where it continues to be excavated.
