22.8" Jurassic Ammonite (Kranosphinctes) Fossil - Largest We've Ever Had

This is an absolutely massive ammonite (Kranosphinctes) fossil from Madagascar. It is Late Jurassic in age and it was collected near Sakaraha in the Tulear Province of Madagascar. It's the largest ammonite we've ever had available, measuring 22.8" wide and weighing in at just over 117 lbs . There is some repair and minor restoration, as is the case with most of the larger ammonites that are fractured by geological forces while still in the ground. The surface has been lightly polished and there is a naturally associated fossil clam within the rock at the open end of the ammonite.

A metal display stand will accompany your purchase.

Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled squids with shells. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. Though their shells resemble that of a nautilus, they are actually more closely related to living octopuses. Ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago, barely surviving several major extinction events. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
