20" Multiple Fossil Fish (Mioplosus, Knightia & Diplomystus) Plate
This is a nice, multiple fossil fish plate including a 9.5" Mioplosus labracoides, a Diplomystus dentatus and a pair of Knightia eocaena. It came from an ash layer at our Fossil Lake Safari quarry near Kemmerer, Wyoming. The ash layer gives the rock a unique, patterning adding to the aesthetics of the piece. The rock measures 20 x 8.6" and is about 3/4" thick. It includes a display stand but we can back the piece and add a wall hanger for an additional charge.
About Fossil Lake
50 million years ago, in the Eocene epoch, these fish thrived in Fossil Lake, which was fed by the Uinta and Rocky Mountain highlands. The anoxic conditions at the bottom of Fossil Lake slowed bacterial decomposition, prevented scavengers from disturbing corpses, and, most interestingly, suffocated creatures that ventured into the oxygen-starved aquatic layer. The result is a miraculous exhibition of Eocene biota: a subtropical aquatic community within sycamore forests, teeming with creatures such as freshwater stingrays, dog-sized horses, menacing alligators, early flying bats, and one of the first primates.
