2.64" Fossil Crocodylian (Thecachampsa) Tooth - South Carolina
This beastly tooth comes out of Cooper River near Charleston, South Carolina. It was collected alongside megalodon teeth, all of which eroded out of sedimentary deposits along Cooper River. It belongs to Thecachampsa (Gavialosuchus) sp., a large gavialoid crocodylian that lived along the eastern United States coast. Thecachampsa inhabited estuaries and shallow coastal waters, unlike its extant relatives.
The enamel preservation of this tooth is excellent, featuring dark coloration and preserved carinae running along both sides of the tooth. A truly gorgeous specimen!
