2.4" Pleistocene Aged Fossil Bison Tooth - Kansas
This is a 2.4" long tooth from a Pleistocene aged fossil bison (Bison occidentalis), collected from Kansas. This would be the left (anatomically) side of the mandible.
Bison occidentalis is an extinct species of bison that roamed North America between the Pleistocene and Holocene. They were a smaller species of bison in comparison to other's during and prior to their time. It's believed B. occidentalis evolved from B. antiquus and became extinct as a result of competition with other grass eaters.
