2.4" Coltraneia Trilobite Fossil - Unique Shell Coloration

This is a beautiful, 2.4" long, bug-eyed, Coltraneia trilobite with amazing "tower eyes" full of hundreds of eye facets. The species has often been referred to as a Treveropyge in the past. It was quarried at Ofaten Mountain, Morocco.

This specimen is quite striking with natural, multi-toned shell coloration. This is likely due to part of the fossil being closer to a seam in the rock allowing water to leach minerals from the shell. It's also quite large for the species and well prepared.

About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
