15" Pleistocene Aged Fossil Bison Jaw Bone - Kansas
This is a 15" long jaw section from a Pleistocene aged fossil bison (Bison occidentalis), collected from the Alluvium Sand of Northwestern Kansas. This would be the left (anatomically) side of the mandible. There is some chipping of the cortical bone along the ventral side of the mandible, and the two anterior teeth have repaired cracks through their roots.
Comes with a display stand.
Bison occidentalis is an extinct species of bison that roamed North America between the Pleistocene and Holocene. They were a smaller species of bison in comparison to other's during and prior to their time. It's believed B. occidentalis evolved from B. antiquus and became extinct as a result of competition with other grass eaters.
