15.2" Polished Sauropod Pubis Bone (Gembone) - Morocco

This is a 15.2" wide (longest measurment) sauropod dinosaur partial pubis bone, collected from the Jurassic deposits along the Northeastern end of the High Atlas Mountains, near Bouarfa, Morocco. The agatized nature of the bone allowed for polishing which can be seen across the majority of the bone. This polishing has exposed the bone's inner cell structure in spots, showing off wonderful coloration and definition.

It is the proximal end of the pubis bone, one of the three (six including right and left side) bones that make up the pelvic girdle. The two largest rough edges of the "Y" shaped bone would have articulated with the ischium and ilium. The thinnest section would have extended further ventrally.

The specimen is accompanied by a metal display stand.

Agatized bone, sometimes referred to as "gembone", is fossilized dinosaur bone in which the original fossil material has been replaced by silica. The impurities within the silica are what give the bone color. Interestingly, this silica replacement often happens at a sub-cellular level, leaving the internal structures intact.
