14.5" Pleistocene Aged Fossil Bison Humerus Bone - Kansas

This is a 14.5" long limb bone (humerus) from a Pleistocene aged fossil bison (Bison occidentalis), collected from the Alluvium Sand of Northwestern Kansas. There is some weathering to both the proximal and distal ends of this bone. There is a natural fracture running along the length of this bone and the proximal end of the humerus has undergone some glue stabilization.

Bison occidentalis is an extinct species of bison that roamed North America between the Pleistocene and Holocene. They were a smaller species of bison in comparison to other's during and prior to their time. It's believed B. occidentalis evolved from B. antiquus and became extinct as a result of competition with other grass eaters.
