11.6" Tyrannosaur (Albertosaurus) Metatarsal

We just finished the preparation on this beautifully preserved Tyrannosaur metatarsal (toe bone). It's 11.6" in length and comes from the Two Medicine Formation (Judith River Group) of Montana. There are three described Tyrannosaurs from this formation but this should be from Albertosaurus.

The level of preservation on this specimen is excellent, the exterior surface of the bone is in great shape and has not been painted. There are a few small gap fills in the bone where it was put back together, and an area of crushing on one side of the bone. Last photo in the series is the bone in a unprepared state.

is a genus of tyrannosaurid dinosaur that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago. It would have been very similar to a T-Rex, but was likely about half the size, weighing less than two tons.

Albertosaurus shared a similar body type with other tyrannosaurids. It was bipedal with very small forearms, each with only two claws. They could run 8-13 miles per hour and may have hunted in packs. Albertosaurus teeth had very thin serrations that would have been used to pull meat from the body of their prey rather than cut it.
