Hadrosaur (Edmontosaurus) Metatarsal (IV) - Wyoming #233814

This is a 10.9" long metatarsal IV bone from the right leg of an adult hadrosaur (Edmontosaurus annectens), collected from our partner's lease on the Lance (Creek) Formation in Niobrara County, Wyoming.

There is natural fracturing to much of the bone that occurred as a result of compression over time within the ground. Many of these fractures have been stabilized with glue. Some bone is missing in spots along the proximal epiphysis. The bone is free of gap fill and/or reconstruction restoration.

Hadrosaurs

are frequently referred to as duck-billed dinosaurs and are members of the Ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. They were fairly common herbivores that roamed Asia, Europe, and North America during the Upper Cretaceous Period. Many species of Hadrosaurs had distinctive crests on their heads, some of which had air-filled chambers that may have produced a distinct sound. These crests may have been used for both audio and visual display purposes.
