10.4" Polished Slab of Petrified Palmwood - Nephi, Utah

This is a unique, 10.4" wide, polished slab of petrified palm (Palmoxylon hebberttii) wood collected near Nephi, Utah. There appears to be one stabilized crack in the slab. Comes with a display stand.

It comes out of an old collection of petrified wood that we recently purchased that has some hard to find pieces from unusual locations, many of which are no longer accessible to collecting.

Petrified palmwood includes a group of fossil woods that contain rod-like structures within the regular grain of the silicified or agatized wood. Depending upon the angle at which they are cut, these structures show up as spots, tapering rods, or continuous lines. The rod-like structures are sclerenchyma bundles that comprise part of the woody tissues that gave the wood its vertical strength.
