10.3" Oreodont (Eporeodon) Skull - South Dakota

This is a nicely prepared, 10.3" long skull of Eporeodon major, an oreodont from the Oligocene-aged Brule Formation of South Dakota.

There is less than 7% restoration to this skull, primarily where the skull fractured during the extraction process. Any gap fill was necessary to ensure the longevity of the skull's integrity. There is some restoration to the tips of the canines, but about 95% of the total teeth appear to be natural, particularly the molars and pre-molars. The specimen is prepped free from the external rock it was found in and is slightly laterally compressed from fossilization and geological processes. Overall, a phenomenal specimen that is representative of one of the larger oreodont species.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
