1.45" Spathacalymene Trilobite With Crystal Cephalopod (Composite)

This is a 1.45" specimen of a fairly rare trilobite from Indiana, Spathacalymene nasuta. This trilobite has an unusual, triangle rostrum coming off the front of it's head. These trilobites are found in exceptionally hard rock in stone quarry and are nearly always found ventral on surfaces, as was the case with this one. It has been flipped over, prepared and remounted on a piece of rock from the same quarry. It appears the front and back half of the trilobite are a composite.

The piece of rock is almost as interesting as the trilobite itself. It is full of bryozoans and there is a large, crystal filled cephalopod fossil running through it that can really be seen on the back side.

About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
