1.27" Triassic Theropod Dinosaur (Coelophysis) Phalange Bone - Arizona

This is the toe bone of a small, Triassic-aged theropod of the genus Coelophysis. The specimen was collected from the Dockum group of Garza County, Texas. There is a repaired crack through the middle of the bone which required some gap fill restoration.

Coelophysis was a small, primitive theropod dinosaur from the mid-Triassic period of the Mesozoic era, approximately 228 to 200 million years ago. Its remains are mainly sourced from the southwestern United States. Despite being one of the earliest known dinosaurs and one of the earliest known from the carnivorous theropod group, many of the tell-tale markers for what made dinosaurs successful are visible in this 10-foot (3 meter) long opportunist. It had a slender body plan with 2 strong running legs and a flexible neck for better maneuverability when feeding and hunting. It competed alongside huge terrestrial crocodilians, both carnivorous and herbivorous, and would lay the groundwork for the success of many more dinosaurs to follow.
