What Are Geodes?
Geodes are begun as hollow, often spherical cavities within rocks that are lined with crystals and other minerals. They often form in air bubbles that form in volcanic rock as it cools, or inside voids left in sedimentary rocks. Over millions of years, hydrothermal fluids or groundwater deposited minerals within these hollow cavities, forming a crystal lining.
By far the most abundant mineral found within geodes is macrocrystalline quartz (including amethyst), but calcite, pyrite, barite, celestite, and chalcedony (agate) are also frequently found. Geodes found at the same locality typically have similar minerals deposited inside.

What Is The Difference Between A Geode, Nodule & Vug?
Geodes are hollow cavities within the rock, while nodules are completely filled in with minerals. Vugs are irregularly shaped pockets typically found alongside veins or breccia, while geodes are rounded or oblong in shape.
What Is The Largest Geode Ever Found?
Two geodes lay claim to be the world's largest: a massive, 35-foot wide celestite geode in Ohio and the 30-foot long, selenite-lined Pulpi Geode in Spain. Depending on how you want to measure size, either one could be considered the largest.
In addition to these two geodes, many massive amethyst geodes have been found in Uruguay. Currently the largest one known is an 18-foot wide, 22-ton behemoth dubbed the "enchanted cave". It is currently displayed at the Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens in Australia.
