DRAGON SCALE STONE SPECIMENS
Dragon scale stone is the trade name of this type of iron nodule found in the Hell Creek Formation of North Dakota. They're found alongside dinosaur bones throughout the Hell Creek deposits, often lying next to dinosaur remains. Despite their name, these stones have nothing to do with dragons aside from their unique polygonal patterning, reminiscent of dragon scales. Their composition is primarily iron oxide with a siderite core and manganese/iron (limonite) oxides that give them their dark red-brown patina.
