DEMANTOID GARNETS SPECIMENS

Demantoid is a rare green variety of andradite garnet. This variety primarily presents as adamantine green dodecahedral crystals. While andradite garnets are characterized by their iron and calcium content, demantoid crystals receive their green coloration from chromium substitution at the chemical level. They are hard enough to be readily cut and faceted, making them a very popular gemstone passing for a diamond/emerald hybrid.

Garnets in general have a rich history that extends well back in recorded time. But demantoid garnets are relative newcomers to the world’s attention, first discovered in 1868 in the mountains of Russia. These garnets quickly gained popularity because of their stunning gem quality straight from the mine. Of all the garnets, demantoids make the most spectacular collector items and gemstones and because they range from a light yellow-green to a deep emerald in color, demantoid garnets offer something for everyone.
