FLORIDA AGATIZED FOSSIL CORAL FOR SALE

Agatized fossil coral from Western Florida. These are technically chalcedony pseudomorphs after coral, appearing as limestone geodes lined with botryoidal agate and druzy quartz. They are Miocene (25-32 million years) in age, and were formed when fine sediments covered shallow coral reefs. As silica-rich groundwater through rock that was formed and exposed as sea levels dropped, it replaced the calcium carbonate coral skeletons with chalcedony. This agate-replaced fossil coral is the state stone of Florida.
