Cute Stalk-Eyed Asaphus Kowalewskii Trilobite - 1.55"
This is a cute, 1.55" specimen of the long, stalk-eyed trilobite Asaphus kowalewskii. It is Middle Ordovician in age and was collected at the Vilpovitsy quarry in the St. Petersburg region of Russia. The stalk eyes likely allowed to survey it's surroundings while remaining buried in the mud.
It's nicely prepared and the caramel colored shell contrasts well against the surrounding limestone. You can see the crack where the limestone was broken to find the trilobite in cross section running up the right hand side of the body. Like basically all trilobites from these quarries there is some shell restoration, probably about 6-7% in total. Most of it is along the repaired crack, and then the tops of some of the axial rings.
